Why did the Trail of Tears happen?  In this investigation, students use historical texts to understand the story of Cherokee Removal and its various causes.  They explore the central question: What is one important cause of the Trail of Tears that people should know about today? Recognizing that there are multiple important causes, students write a counterargument to argue for why one cause in particular is important to remember.
